What is safer beauty? Well to me it’s taking the time to look at what is in my products and knowing if those ingredients could cause my family any long term harm. It’s also understanding what the government can and can’t do when a product is found to be harmful to the public. Which by the way is very little.
There hasn’t been an updated law regarding our personal care products since 1938. And the FDA doesn’t have to approve any products before they hit the shelves. Neither can they pull the products that have been found to be harmful, they can ask that the company pull their products.
Europe has banned or restricted 1,400 harmful chemicals, Canada 600. How many do you think the U.S. has banned?…. 30. The U.S. has banned or restricted a total of 30 harmful chemicals. Why are we at such a small number?
But Beautycounter is working to make changes. Theres all the hard work they do on their products. They have a whole list of over 1,500 ingredients that are never used. They are certified B Corporation, in short, that means they use the power of business to help solve social and environmental problems by voluntarily meeting rigorous standards of transparency, accountability, and performance. And you can not buy your way into being a B Corporation.
And they just announced a partnership with Tuffs University to research endocrine disruptors. Oh and Beautycounter has been to DC multiple times to talk with senators about the issues. Through those chats there is a new bill that’s being sponsored by 2 different senators. It’s called the Personal Care Products Safety Act.
The Personal Care Products Safety Act would give the FDA the ability to review the safety of products. It would also give the FDA the same tools for ensuring the safety of personal care products as it uses to regulate food and drugs. It would bring the industry up to date with how it’s regulated. Because right now for the most part their hands are tied.
Now that you know, did you want to do something to help?
You can always start by “voting” with your dollar bills. Buy products that support the mission of cleaner beauty. Here are a few things to be aware of as you look for new safer products. Just because a product says it’s all natural or organic doesn’t always make it safe. Watch out for fragrance being listed on the ingredients. The important part is to do some research or ask me to do it for you.
